Adding new AI capabilities is impressive, but the key to successful technology is finding practical everyday uses for that technology. OpenAI has recently noticed a large gap between what AI tools can do and how people are using them. To bridge that gap, the company is working on a new initiative that blends AI tools with education.
OpenAI’s Education for Countries is a new pillar of the OpenAI for Countries initiative, which helps governments offer effective ways for people to use AI.
How Will This Initiative Help with Education?
For this new focus, OpenAI will work with governments in multiple countries to include AI in education systems where it makes sense. AI tools can make it easier to personalize learning, reduce administrative burden, and prepare students for the workforce. OpenAI is working with Ministries of Education, partners, universities, and researchers to bring this project to life.
The core elements of this initiative include:
- AI Tools for Learning: Tools like ChatGPT Edu, GPT‑5.2, study mode, and canvas can be customized to fit local learning priorities.
- Learning Outcomes Research: Large-scale, national research initiatives will focus on how AI can assist with learning and teacher productivity to help with local policy, technology, and workforce development.
- OpenAI Certifications and Training: OpenAI and ChatGPT-based certifications can help students and educators learn practical AI skills that align with relevant workforce priorities.
- Global Network of Partners: Governments, education leaders, and researchers worldwide are working together to find and highlight responsible approaches for AI in education.
These tactics will help achieve OpenAI’s mission of ensuring AI benefits everyone. Education has a huge impact on our world, so it’s an important area of focus for new technology.
What Countries Are Involved?
The first group OpenAI will work with includes Estonia, Greece, Italy’s Conference of University Rectors (CRUI), Jordan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Trinidad & Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates. Rollouts of AI education tools will be in a phased approach, starting with giving educators the tools they need and then later using AI for classrooms.
OpenAI already deployed tools like ChatGPT Edu nationwide in Estonia, which reached over 30,000 students, educators, and researchers in only one year. One research partnership with the University of Tartu and Stanford is measuring how AI affects the learning outcomes of 20,000 students over time.
As research continues, this initiative will expand to more countries. The next cohort of countries is expected to be announced in late 2026.
