Instagram Rolls Out TikTok Shop Clone with Affiliate Commerce and Creator Tagging

Meta is planning to mimic the TikTok Shop’s success by introducing affiliate links for Instagram Reels.

Ever since the TikTok Shop rolled out in 2023, it has experienced massive success, including Black Friday wins and influential marketing campaigns. Naturally, this success would make other social media programs want to follow in TikTok’s footsteps.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, announced that Instagram will be rolling out its own version of the TikTok Shop. The announcement feels a little premature since Meta doesn’t have documentation for how to activate the program yet, but it’s already big news for brands.

What We Know Right Now

On Instagram, Mosseri shared that within the next few weeks, users can start using affiliate links to tag products in their Reels. Here’s what we know so far:

  • Creators can add up to 30 products in a Reel.
  • Links will lead to the brand’s own checkout rather than having a checkout directly in Instagram.
  • Affiliate links are supported if the link leads to a specific product in a catalog.
  • Brands will later be able to scale organic affiliate content using Instagram boost or ads manager.
  • Creators will be able to find new affiliate opportunities with Amazon and Shopee directly on Instagram.

So, while this feature resembles the TikTok Shop, not having a checkout within Instagram is a key difference. It will make the tracking and attribution imperfect, but it’ll be beneficial to brands.

What We Don’t Know Yet

There’s still a lot to learn about this update, and here are a few things that haven’t been confirmed yet:

  • If brands can create evergreen “open collabs” directly in Meta like they can with the TikTok Shop.
  • If Meta is only enabling affiliate transactions or if it’ll act as the middleman for commission payments.

For all the details, we’ll have to wait and see what’s offered as Meta begins rolling out this feature. This is a great opportunity for businesses, especially since brands will easily be able to activate TikTok Shop affiliates as Instagram affiliates to scale growth.
