Only days before the annual I/O conference, Google revealed plans to release a lineup of laptops later this year. The Googlebook devices are expected to arrive sometime this fall, with additional hardware details to be revealed in the coming months.
Gemini seems to be at the center of the computing experience. Rather than treating AI as a single feature, Google is embedding it throughout the operating system, apps, and connected devices.
The announcement also signaled significant changes to the operating system and hardware design, along with new tools like Magic Pointer.
Several hardware manufacturers, including Acer, Dell, and HP, will release their own models later this year.
Google Brings Gemini Into Personal Computing
A large part of the announcement focused on how Gemini will change the overall laptop experience for Googlebook users. The device will have Google’s AI assistant built into the operating system, allowing users to complete tasks autonomously.
One detail that the company focused on in its recent preview of Googlebook was the cursor. It’s moving from a traditional laptop cursor to a Magic Pointer, which will trigger Gemini-powered assistance and recommendations when users wiggle it over different parts of the screen.
Gemini will handle tasks like setting up meetings, interpreting data, converting files, and generating images. Google also previewed personalized widgets and AI features designed to make day-to-day productivity feel more streamlined.
The computers will also feature a Glowbar on the laptop cover. The light will change colors and patterns based on how the computer is being used.
Googlebook Will Run on Aluminum OS
Googlebook devices will now run on a new operating system called Aluminum OS. The company describes it as a “ground-up Android desktop operating system,” which is specifically designed for its new AI-focused laptops.
In addition to supporting Gemini integration throughout the system, Aluminum OS supports Android applications and allows users to move between devices mid-task. For example, someone could edit files from their phone or pull up an email that was started on one device in another right where they left off.
While compatible with Android devices, the operating system is designed to support a desktop experience. It will include a file manager system, app drawer, multi-tasking tools, and resizable application windows.
The launch shows how Google is moving beyond Chromebooks in the hardware space and focusing on AI-native computing, rather than browser-focused devices.
A New Chapter in Personal Computing
With Google pushing further into AI, Googlebook is being positioned as a new type of laptop capable of AI-powered workflows.
Between its Gemini integration, Aluminum OS, and features designed to support autonomous computing, the company appears ready to play a larger role in the next generation of personal computing.
As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life at work and at home, companies will need to find new ways to show up within AI-driven workflows.
