Microsoft Gives Copilot New Features for Home and Office Work

The new Microsoft Copilot features add more ways to organize work, develop software, and assign ongoing tasks to AI agents.

Microsoft is expanding Copilot with new features designed to bring AI into more aspects of everyday work.

The September 25 announcement introduced several major additions to Microsoft’s workplace AI platform, including Home, Code, and Autopilot.

The changes give Copilot a larger role in how people work, from building custom tools to handling ongoing work, broadening the platform’s role in personal and professional tasks.

Autopilot Gives Scout a Starring Role in Copilot

One of the biggest stories in Microsoft’s latest Copilot news is how Autopilot is now built into the broader Copilot experience.

When Microsoft introduced Scout earlier this year, it worked as a separate agent with its own desktop app. Now, Microsoft is bringing the same ongoing AI assistance into the Copilot platform, tying it more closely to its wider AI ecosystem.

Microsoft Autopilot is meant for work that continues after an initial prompt. Users can give the agent instructions and guidance and let it keep moving longer-running workflows forward without step-by-step manual input.

Autopilot can:

  • Keep projects moving with less hands-on input
  • Create timelines for longer projects
  • Move multi-step workflows forward across tools like Outlook and Teams
  • Follow up on work in progress

Autopilot is designed to stay involved in complex workflows over days, weeks, or even months without users needing to restart the process manually.

Microsoft is positioning Autopilot as an AI coworker embedded in the systems businesses already rely on. A private preview is expected later this month.

Code Makes Software Development More Accessible

Soon, teams will be able to pass off certain technical tasks within their workflows to one of the latest Copilot features: Code.

Users can simply describe the tool that they want, such as a dashboard or an app, and Code can build it on the spot. The goal is to make small-scale software development available to business owners and teams who aren’t developers.

While this feature is still largely in testing, Microsoft plans to widen access in the coming weeks after its initial rollout.

Bringing Copilot’s AI Tools to a New Home

Home is the main workspace that serves as a home base for tools like Chat or Cowork without jumping between different parts of the platform.

Users can move between tasks, ask questions, and return to a different stage in a workflow all within a single workspace.

Microsoft is also adding Word, PowerPoint, and Excel into Home, allowing teams that use Microsoft 365 to create and edit files or collaborate through Copilot.

Home will begin rolling out through Microsoft’s Frontier program in the next few weeks. Eventually, users should be able to simply describe what they need in natural language and let Copilot determine whether Chat, Cowork, or Code is the best fit.

The Future of AI Tools in the Workplace

Microsoft’s latest updates to Copilot show how quickly AI is becoming part of daily operations across industries. Instead of using AI to answer simple questions or perform isolated tasks, teams can carry out multi-step workflows, collaborate, and build custom tools without specialized technical skills.

As AI becomes more embedded in everyday business operations, companies that want to get ahead will need clear strategies for where these tools fit and how to connect them within existing systems.
