Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Web Services are expanding the use of generative AI in Prime Video film and television through the GenAI Creators’ Fund.
While Prime Video is not the first entertainment company to experiment with AI, the announcement is a clear signal that the company is putting considerable resources and effort into AI-assisted production.
This move suggests that AI-generated entertainment isn’t something far off in the future. It’s already entering the production queue.Â
AI-Assisted Production Moves From Idea to Action
AI in entertainment has been discussed and debated for several years. But recent moves from major streaming services have made the transition toward AI-assisted TV and film more concrete.
Amazon is not the only major company to put significant resources behind AI entertainment. Netflix is reportedly developing an AI animation studio, INKubator, which is focused on short-form animated content.
But Amazon is not just funding AI-assisted content. It is building a full AI production suite with AWS infrastructure, studio funding, a production platform, and Prime Video distribution under one strategy.
Inside the GenAI Creators’ Fund
The GenAI Creators’ Fund is a program from Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Web Services. It was set up to provide approved filmmakers and digital creators with technical support and funding to use AI production tools in entertainment projects.
The first approved projects were recently announced—with all three planned as animated series for Prime Video. These include Punky Duck, Cupcake & Friends, and Love, Diana Music Hunters. However, shortly after the announcement, Jorge R. Gutierrez decided not to proceed with making Punky Duck due to backlash from fans and peers.
Project Nara
Project Nara is the production platform that creators will use to make AI-assisted entertainment projects. It is built on AWS, providing teams with a shared workspace to collaborate with AI tools.
Funding and Studio Support
While the exact fund size is unknown, the GenAI Creators’ Fund shows that AI-assisted production is getting support from a major production studio. This also shows Amazon is choosing a coordinated approach rather than treating AI as a limited pilot.
Prime Video Distribution
With Prime Video attached, these projects are not small experiments. They are being developed for a major streaming platform with 315 million ad-supported viewers globally. This is a strong indication that AI-assisted entertainment is much closer to reaching mainstream audiences worldwide.
The Future of Performance Creative
While Prime Video’s push into AI-assisted production signals a shift toward AI-generated entertainment, it raises an important point for brands.
Faster production won’t drive engagement and conversions without a strong creative strategy and expert human input.
