Chinese Officials Respond to TikTok Proposal Amid Potential Ban

After getting four extensions, we’re finally getting more information about a potential TikTok deal between the U.S. and China.

TikTok’s last deadline was December 16th, and the app obviously didn’t go dark at that time. The app received yet another extension, leaving people more confused about the platform’s fate than ever.

Reports before Christmas suggested that a deal had been signed, but there’s no official confirmation of that. The deal would mean that TikTok’s American operations would be sold to an Oracle-led consortium, which would allow the app to continue in the U.S.

However, now that we’ve entered the new year, it seems there are still a lot of questions. Chinese officials have given some insight about the situation, but their statement doesn’t clarify everything.

The Statement from Chinese Officials

Even though the White House kept assuring people that the TikTok deal would go through, Chinese officials have said very little about the topic. It wasn’t until just before Christmas that we saw a hint of progress. At that time, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew sent an email to staff to alert them of the deal.

The email stated that the deal would go into effect on January 22nd, 2026, which is a day before its next expiration date. At first, that statement seemed to confirm that the deal is moving forward. However, Chinese state media released a statement about the deal on Christmas that made everything seem a little less certain.

China Daily reported: “The Chinese government hopes that relevant parties can reach a solution regarding TikTok that complies with Chinese laws and regulations and achieves a balance of interests. Spokesperson He Yongqian made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a query regarding reports that TikTok has signed agreements with three investors to establish a new joint venture in the United States to ensure its continued operations there.”

That makes the deal sound a little less certain. The statement went on to say that Chinese officials urged the U.S. “to provide a fair, open, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for the continuous and stable operation of Chinese enterprises in the United States.”

What Does This Mean for TikTok’s Future?

It seems the Chinese government still isn’t completely on board with selling off TikTok to the U.S. With this new information, the future of the app is completely up in the air. The deal could go through on January 22nd, but it seems that nothing is set in stone.

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, hasn’t made an official statement yet, so we’ll have to wait and see. It seems like the Chinese government is still going over all the details of the deal before deciding if it’s worth agreeing to.

We might see another extension, TikTok may continue in the U.S. under an American company, or it could still be banned in the U.S. There’s no way to guarantee one outcome at this time.
