OpenAI and Amazon Begin Multi-Year Strategic Partnership

The two companies announced an 8-year, $100 billion agreement to enhance AI innovation.

After the announcement that Amazon.com Inc. is one of the investors in OpenAI’s recent funding round, OpenAI and Amazon shared that they’re partnering to accelerate AI innovation worldwide, particularly for enterprises, startups, and end consumers.

Amazon is currently investing $50 billion in OpenAI. This will start with a $15 billion investment, and then they’ll contribute another $35 billion in the next few months once certain conditions are met.

What is the Purpose of this Partnership?

OpenAI and Amazon are working together to create a Stateful Runtime Environment, which helps AI agents keep context, remember prior work, and work across various software tools and data sources. It’s built to run ongoing projects and workflows efficiently.

The Stateful Runtime Environment is powered by OpenAI’s models while running natively in Amazon Bedrock. It’s being trained to run optimally on Amazon Web Services (AWS), allowing AI applications in Amazon to be more cohesive and complex.

AWS will also be a third-party distributor for OpenAI Frontier, which is OpenAI’s most advanced enterprise AI platform. Frontier helps companies build, deploy, and manage AI agent teams. By working with Amazon, this AI platform will become more accessible and advanced.

What’s Changing Because of This Partnership?

OpenAI and Amazon first announced a partnership in November 2025, but this new announcement is growing that $38 billion agreement to a $100 billion agreement lasting 8 years. With more time and funds, we’ll be seeing some significant improvements for OpenAI and Amazon.

Trainium Powers the Growing Customer Demand

OpenAI will use 2 gigawatts from Trainium, a high-performance learning accelerator created by AWS. This will help the AI company support the demand for advanced workloads, including Stateful Runtime and Frontier. OpenAI secures long-term capacity by working with AWS. The partnership also lowers costs while still increasing the efficiency of improving AI intelligence.

This commitment will include Trainium3, the current model, and Trainium4, the next-generation model set to come out in 2027. Trainium4 is expected to offer major performance gains with expanded memory bandwidth.

Amazon Offers Custom Models

OpenAI’s support will also give Amazon the opportunity to offer customized models for Amazon developers. OpenAI models can be tailored to support different customer-facing applications, enhancing and complementing the tools that are already available.

“OpenAI and Amazon share a belief that AI should show up in ways that are practical and genuinely useful for people. Combining OpenAI’s intelligence with Amazon’s infrastructure and global reach helps us put powerful AI into the hands of businesses and users at real scale,” said OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman.
