OpenAI Academy Unleashes a New Learning Hub for Journalists

From specialized training to open-source projects, the OpenAI Academy now offers free tools for journalists, editors, and news organizations looking to automate their careers.

OpenAI Academy has expanded its digital hub, this time for those working in newsroom organizations.

The American Journalism Project and the Lenfest Institute for Journalism partnered with OpenAI to help this learning center come to life.

According to OpenAI, “…we’re committed to being a strong partner to news organizations—supporting their work and convening the right people to move the industry forward.”

The news organization toolkit was officially released on December 17.

What Does OpenAI Academy for News Organizations Offer?

News Organizations offers several great tools and resources for journalists, editors, publishers, and others in the news industry:

Digital Training

OpenAI has a video-based training bootcamp. The course, entitled “AI Essentials for Journalists,” features demos on how to use ChatGPT in the journalism industry. It outlines document analysis, data extraction, and research.

Practical Guides

The platform features guides called “Newsroom Playbooks.” These step-by-step guides provide recommendations for investigative research, multilingual reporting, and production efficiency.

Open-Source Resources

The News Organizations hub gives newsrooms the ability to clone journalist-friendly tools for free.

These open-source tools include:

  • Fundraising GPT: Assists newsrooms in writing grant applications and donor letters
  • Audience Insights GPT: Analyzes a newsroom’s target audience’s interests to help them decide what to write on
  • Archive GPT: Helps newsroom professionals easily find certain pieces they wrote in the past

Responsible Use Tips

OpenAI also provides responsible use tips called “The Ethical Kit.” These tips help newsrooms develop internal policies and checklists to ensure staff use AI in good faith. They can also ensure a news organization is able to remain authoritative and trustworthy in the public eye, despite using AI.

Who Else Can Benefit from OpenAI Academy?

OpenAI Academy doesn’t just have resources for news organizations and journalists.

It also offers Academy versions for:

  • Education professionals
  • Small businesses
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Government employees

Scholars looking for work can also benefit from OpenAI Academy.
