OpenAI Faces ‘Code Red’ with Recent Release of Google Gemini 3

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is at a “critical time” amid heavy competition from Google’s newest AI model release, Gemini 3.

ChatGPT Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman proclaims “code red” against its Google-owned chatbox competitor, Gemini.

“We are at a critical time for ChatGPT,” Altman said to his team via a leaked internal message. “I expect the vibes out there to be rough for a bit.”

Google upgraded its AI chatbot, Gemini 3, on November 18, 2025.

The upgrade includes improvements in solving complex problems, multimodal understanding, and executing multi-step tasks. New features range from Deep Think Mode to enhanced image generation via Nano Banana Pro—revolutionizing how people interact with artificial intelligence.

OpenAI’s Course of Action in Response to Gemini 3

OpenAI is bracing for heavy competition, with both immediate and long-term strategy plans in the works.

Urgent matters include improving ChatGPT’s speed, reliability, and personalization. OpenAI is also focused on delaying certain products to accelerate the release of their latest model, GPT-5.2, co-named Garlic.

Garlic’s features are not yet publicized. However, updates will include enhanced reasoning and coding, improved speed, various bug fixes, along rumored advancements in safety features.

Based on internal tests, Garlic has performed well. OpenAI anticipates the upcoming release will outperform Gemini 3.

Compared to Gemini, ChatGPT also currently holds a larger customer base. The company considers this an advantage.

Gemini vs ChatGPT: What Professionals Have to Say

Until Garlic’s release, competition is very tight, with many professionals permanently switching over to Gemini since its recent update.

Salesforce chief executive, Marc Benioff, took to X. “I’ve used ChatGPT every day for 3 years. Just spent 2 hours on Gemini 3. I’m not going back,” he said. “The leap is insane — reasoning, speed, images, video… everything is sharper and faster. It feels like the world just changed, again.”

Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe, also had some thoughts to share on X about Gemini 3. “I asked Gemini 3 to make an interactive web page summarizing 10 breakthroughs in genetics over the past 15 years,” he said. “Pretty cool IMO.”

When it comes to any AI model, however, there’s always room for improvement.

“I must say I found Gemini 3.0 rather underwhelming when it comes to writing,” Pawel Tatarek, a freelance B2B and SaaS content writer, said in a LinkedIn post. “But there’s one area where it outperforms the other LLMs I’ve tried. Multimedia analysis.”

While OpenAI is feeling the heat, Altman released a dignified congratulations to one of his company’s biggest rivals. “Congrats to Google on Gemini 3! Looks like a great model.”

Nonetheless, the ChatGPT team will continue working swiftly in the background to reach the high bar that Gemini has raised. It’s clear that the rapid advances of AI models like Gemini 3 put substantial pressure on rival companies like OpenAI. Companies can stay ahead by developing a strategic blueprint and redefining their core priorities.
